When thinking of fun, collecting antiques is not generally what comes to one’s mind. Despite what you may think, collecting antiques can be really fun!! You can do anything from finding a topic of interest and starting a collection to using antiques as a way to look at your own family’s past. Some of the more popular collection items are stamps, Tiffany lamps/silverware etc. (worth A LOT of money), sports cards, and Disney memorabilia, but the possibilities are endless when starting a collection of antiques. Into music? Collect old records and music gear. Into cars? Collect antique models and/or artwork that showcase some of your favorite rides! Antique collecting is what you make it out to be, and can prove to be surprisingly entertaining and fascinating.

Antique collections are a great way to look at a family’s past. You can often tell a lot about a family’s old hobbies and habits, and can gain a great sense of their financial standing. So next time you have to visit grandma’s house, make it an exciting adventure and take a look around when you’re there! You might be pleasantly surprised at what feelings some of the old stuff that you used to think was junk bring to you! Take a closer look at some that old “junk” and you will gain a better appreciation for the craftsmanship for things made in “the old days”… after all, very few things were mass produced by robots back then.

Collecting antiques can also be a great way of meeting new people and starting some great conversations. If you happen to have started collecting coins recently, for example, you may be surprised to know that a quick search on google may lead you not only to a group of people in your area that share the similar interest, but also connections that can likely broaden your collection, sometimes even by trading them something that will add to theirs! So, as you can imagine, antique collecting can really be a great thing!

Another thing that I find particularly awesome about collecting antiques is what a great experience it can be when traveling. Whether it be popping into an antique store here and there on weekend trips within your own state, or traveling abroad and collecting antiques from all corners of the globe, the antiques you collect while traveling can harness great memories from your journey as well as remind you of how differently people may have lived from location to location in older times. I have actually made it a personal goal of mine to add at least one antique to my collection from every new city I visit. It is a great way of creating what I can most accurately describe as a graphical and physical journal of the places I have been.

So all in all, collecting antiques can be a really fun experience! Fine something that you find particularly fascinating and relate it to antiques. Begin collecting antiques that have to do with something that you love, and you will soon realize it is not the boring experience you may have envisioned, but an exciting one that never seems to end since there is always more out there and further back in time to explore!!
